Been a PC gamer for almost 20 years. Tried to play console games (coleco, original nintendo, super nintendo, PS1, PS2, xbox1, xbox360, Wii) I found the games too dumbed down and repetitive. My opinion is consoles are generally inferior in graphics, sound, community involvement, controls and re-playability. They are however easier to use and depending on your technical knowledge or your willingness to learn some computer skills they may be cheaper. Ultimately consoles are designed for joe 6pack who slaps in their disk press the start button and away they go mashing the controller pad.

I know a bunch of console users who thought PC gaming was TOO expensive or not that much better than their Next Gen consoles. After showing them how cheap PC gaming actually is and side by side comparisons of games on other platforms they all went out and upgraded their regular PC's for gaming. Many of them simply attached their computer to their HD TVs and home audio setups so they could play on the couch. I remember when I showed them crysis maxed out they couldn't believe a game of that caliber even existed.

In short, if you want the best gaming experience go PC if not go console. Plus valves digital distribution client "STEAM" is awesome and a reason to go PC in itself.

<a href="#comment-206" rel="nofollow">@Richard</a>
Yeah, that's my concern: there are plenty of good games that are PC only or would be much better on the PC. If I were to use the PC for more than just games, I could justify the price, but Windows is just terrible for my work. The Sennheiser amp you suggested looks interesting and it looks like it would work.

I tried to get away from PC with the 360 but I couldn't. There's still too many games on the PC worth playing. FPS games on the PC are about as good as they are in the console at this point, but I still need to keep the PC for the RTS games. Also, there are some niche games on the PC that are really good but would never make it on a console (Space Rangers 2, X3, Mount & Blade). It's definitely more cost effective to buy a 360 at this point. You get access to more good games than on the PC for half the price. For me, I'm willing to pay extra for those few PC good games because I have so much fun with them.

For sound, I had looked for a Sennheiser DSP-360 when I was trying to find a similar solution. I couldn't find one but it sounds like it could be what you're looking for. It's a small, portable amp that basically takes surround sound inputs and has an output for headphone jacks. Maybe you can find something similar.
