Microfracture: +13 weeks

I’m well past three months since the surgery and can say that I pretty much feel normal.  Right now, the only thing that really concerns me is that my knee will pop occasionally when I’m walking.  It also does it during the leg curls and leg extensions at physical therapy.  The physical therapist thinks is just everything loosening up, but again I hate to think it’s the microfracture area being torn up by my kneecap.

In the rec center today, I got a comment about my left leg looking smaller than my right from one of the members of the women’s team.  Like me, she continued on to grad school at William and Mary (MBA) after undergrad and using up eligibility.  It seems a lot of us graduates have gotten banged up — she broke her wrist and possibly tore a ligament when running.  My roommate from senior year has cartilage issues, and another guy two years ahead of me crashed on his bike and broke his wrist.  It seems that those who are still in one piece are taking it more conservatively or just not running at all.  Except for Ed.  Of course, he was continuously hurt while on the team and is holding together quite well lately.

Since I’ll be at home the rest of the week I’ll get to use the resistance trainer with the road bike.  Soon, I’ll be able to go out on the roads again but the weather has to cooperate, which doesn’t happen much in the winter.  I could probably handle not running as long as I could get outside on the bike periodically.  It wouldn’t be as good, but it would be enough to keep me from going insane.
