Microfracture: +12 weeks

It’s now almost three months since the surgery.

Like I was, the physical therapist was surprised that I suddenly was able to walk normally.  Since he thinks I’m making progress, I’m down to visits twice per week.  Going in there takes a lot of time and it’s usually 2+ hours to do stuff that would take me an extra 20 minutes in the school rec center.  As I decrease my PT visits, I will probably start doing more weight machines in the rec center when I go there to bike and use the elliptical.

I’ve been doing about 15 minutes on the bike followed by the same amount on the elliptical.  Yesterday I went home and used the resistance trainer with my dad’s road bike for 30 minutes.  The bike really seems to make me a lot more tired than it used to and my plan is to do more of that (compared to the elliptical) so I can start going out on the roads again.

As far as running goes, the PT says 16 weeks is the minimum and he wants to bring in the athletic department trainer to get some input on a return plan.  From my standpoint, the prospect of running soon seems a little scary and I’ve got everything to lose by starting up too soon.  I would like to wait until early-mid January at the earliest.  The athletic trainer was great with return from injury programs while I was competing so his input will be really helpful.  He helped my teammate return successfully from microfracture a few years ago.

Running again will be great if everything holds up, which is why I really could use the guidance as to when to start, how much to progress, how much I can handle safely, and warning signs to pay attention to.  I wish it was warmer for my return since I really don’t handle the cold well when it comes to running, but I can’t really control the schedule for my surgery and rehab.  I guess I could wait a month or two, but aside from improving leg strength, I think the longer I’m out the harder it will be to come back.
