I get up early and get on the bike this morning. Within 20 minutes — poof, flat tire.
Fortunately, I carry a spare tube and small pump in case this happens, but on the first day of biking, I was surprised. Actually, now that I think about it, the first day I biked with Jason in last fall, he got a flat.
I did notice the front tire seemed low on air when I put air into it this morning. It is possible the front tube had a slow leak. However, there are trees here that secrete sap that is the equivalent of superglue. On my runs, I have seen big patches of sap the trees have dumped all over the place and it makes your shoes stick to the ground. I wouldn’t be surprised if I rode over a patch of this and then picked up a piece of glass from the road.
Of course, when I got the flat, I fell, right on to the hip that had been sore from running.
I did notice the rubber in the tires was cracking. I’m wondering if it’s time to replace them.
Otherwise, it wasn’t too bad biking this morning. The bike lanes make things much better than at home and the lights weren’t as bad as I thought they were going to be. The weather was also really nice. There were a ton of other cyclists out, not just commuters. One of them latched on to my wheel for awhile. I only got in about an hour because it took some time to fix the flat, but maybe I can go more tomorrow and on the other days until I (hopefully) can run again.
