The cause of my (biking) problems:

The concrete company from hell.

Every day on Route 5, hundreds of dirt-filled dump trucks enter and leave this factory in Charles City County and make for some white-knuckled biking. Huge dump trucks howling by just inches from your arm at 55 mph. Foooooommmmm!

They also make these wakes of air that follow them, which boost you along when they are traveling in the same direction, but feel like a wall of dirt going the other way.

I mean really, what are they doing? Digging a hole to the center of the earth? There must be at least one truck every minute and a half during the 50 minutes or so I was on Route 5.

Not to mention the dust and dirt all over the place. It would be the perfect biking route if it wasn’t for this factory of doom.

Once you get west of it, then there are no more trucks, but then you have to turn around and go through it again.

Aside from that, Brian wants me to do a 3-hour ride with him this weekend. He found a route on the internet and wants to try it out now that the trainer says his knee is strong enough to use the bike. It sounds interesting, but could get a little sore towards the end. If my bike can hold together, that is. I’ve been looking at some new bikes since this one is 30 years old and makes all kinds of noises and doesn’t shift right. It’s also too big. I just need an entry level road bike that I can use to cross train or when I’m hurt, like now. Of course, as soon as I drop the money on one, I immediately get better and never have the opportunity to use it again, unless I want to risk biking to class with it. Of course, getting better immediately is just another incentive to get one. I was looking at the Lemond Nevada City, Bianchi Brava, and the one my dad has, Trek 1200. For something that is considered ‘entry level,’ they are all very expensive. There are some on eBay though, but then I also have to find one that is my size. Oh well, something to think about.

Today was also the best day so far for my achilles, but I can still feel it every once in a while.
